It is the seat of the Middlesbrough Bishop, who serves as the ordinary of the Middlesbrough Diocese in the Province of Liverpool.

The first Cathedral Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succor was constructed in 1876 and inaugurated on August 21 of that same year. It was located on Sussex Street in Middlesbrough's former St. Hilda's neighborhood. As the diocese of Middlesbrough did not exist until December 1878, the church was then part of the Diocese of Beverley. It was initially constructed as a 1,500-seat church for the benefit of the residents of Middlesbrough, not as a cathedral. On December 18, 1879, Richard Lacy, the city's first bishop, was ordained.

According to news reports from August 1984, the cathedral had structural issues and might need to be demolished. Any demolition was formally prohibited because the structure was a Grade II listed structure. The cathedral had also grown more and more isolated due to the town's changing population at the time. Therefore, it was necessary to build a new cathedral to replace the old one. Construction on the brand-new Saint Mary's Cathedral began in November 1985 in the Middlesbrough suburb of Coulby Newham. Fire destroyed the old cathedral in May 2000. Children playing inside the building, which was by this time already in a serious state of disrepair, are said to have started the fire. The structure was quickly demolished as a result of the extensive fire damage and potential for further collapse.

The Cleveland Police's Middlesbrough headquarters are now located on the site. Frank Swainston, who designed the new cathedral in Coulby Newham originally, passed away shortly after the general layout was decided. Peter Fenton, his assistant, created the precise drawings and created the cathedral's furnishings. With the assistance of Professor Patrik Nuttgens and J.O. Tarren, he completed all of this. Bishop of Middlesbrough Augustine Harris blessed the foundation stone on Sunday, November 3, 1985. He later dedicated it in 1998. The cathedral is a sleek, contemporary structure that resembles the Catholic cathedral in Liverpool in some ways. The sanctuary, the nave, the chapel for the Blessed Sacrament, the sacristy, the church hall, the narthex (the entrance porch), and the campanile are all parts of the building complex.
