Clare Castle

On our trip to Suffolk, we just had to visit Clare Castle country park, especially as we're travelling with dogs. We enjoyed it. There were plenty of walks there but done a short walk, or fairly short. a very pretty and Lovely day out in the nice town of Clare Castle. Although it was bank holiday Monday, we decided to take a trip here (rather than join the hordes trying to get to the seaside!) Parked at the country park car park, which is handy but quite small (get there early so not to be disappointed!) Clare Castle is right at the centre of the town and has handy WC facilities and lots of waymarked walks to follow. We opted for a walk through the park and out into the surrounding countryside, finishing back at the park (probably 4 - 5 miles all in) but there are shorter and longer walks as well.

All wheelchair friendly (in the park at least) Good views from the easily accessible 'bailey' (upper part of where the castle was originally built) Good children's play area also, so you can visit here just for that if you have small children. Park has a quaint visitor centre, with a very knowledgeable local guy there who was able to give pointers as to what to see, which places to visit, etc. Sadly, the Platform 1 cafe and the old steam shed were closed (even though it's a bank holiday Monday!) They had been affected by COVID but we were told Monday is closing day for these anyway? We did find a small place to eat on the road leading down to the car park, as none of the other places in the town seemed to be open either, bizarrely! Well worth a visit for the day. The town has several interesting buildings and a short town trail to follow as well.

Probably best to bring a packed lunch if you want to make sure you eat during the day!!. was recommended to visit Clare Castle Country Park by the owner of the lovely guest house I was staying at in Clare. I had driven four hours so wanted to walk a little. This didn’t disappoint! Lovely nature trail although the swan looking after her Cygnets did decide I was going to cut my exploration a bit short but I accept that was her privilege! The view from the moat was well worth the climb.
